7 March Topic:  Facing the Giants

Facing The Giants

Men of Vision

7 March 2015

OPENING PRAYER

I have been praying for a good topic to speak about and since I or we have many giants that have been trying to take us down I figured what better topic than from the movie Facing the Giants.

We all will face giants at one time or another in our lives. By giants, I am speaking of what seem to be insurmountable problems and issues. We try to fell these giants, but often they seem to only grow stronger with the passing of time.

It could be a giant of fear. Or it might be a giant of some type of personal sin that you fall into again and again. It might be the sin of pride or envy or gluttony or lust or something else.

In a related way, your giant might be one of addiction, something that has a grip on your life. Then again, it could be a giant of threat that is taunting you today. Someone has slandered you. A lawsuit has been filed against you. Maybe there is even a threat against your very life.

Or it might be a different kind of giant altogether, like an unbelieving spouse or a prodigal child. You have prayed for them. You have asked the Lord to reach them, yet they seem to become more hardened by sin as the years pass by. You find yourself wondering how you will ever overcome this.

So how do we deal with giants? We find the answer in the Old Testament account of David and Goliath. Most of us are familiar with the story.

What a victory it was as David boldly defeated the giant Goliath, armed only with a slingshot and five smooth stones. The will of the Philistines was broken. The Israelites were reinvigorated. And it was all because a little shepherd boy answered the call of God and cut down the giant.

So what can we learn from this story about facing off with our own giants in life?

One - recognize that we all have giants. We all face severe hardships, seemingly insurmountable obstacles and temptations. We all have problems. We all have temptations.

We read in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure" (nlt).

While it is true we all have giants, it is also true that every giant can be defeated. After all, giants rarely start out that way.

Goliath was not always a giant. He was not always 9-feet-6-inches tall. He was once a baby. And with the passing of time and the nurture of others, the baby became a child. And the child became a teenager. And the teenager became a man. And the man turned into a giant.

In the same way, giants often begin quite small. When we have a big sin in our lives, it started as a little sin that was allowed, nurtured, fed, and even encouraged, and then became a giant that taunts us. It started with a so-called Christian liberty that we proclaimed and is now getting the best of us.

In time, little things become big things.

Two - realize that the battle belongs to the Lord. David told Goliath, "This is the Lord's battle, and he will give you to us!" (1 Samuel 17:47). That is why giants defeat us again and again—because we face them in our own strength and we lose. We need to realize this is the Lord's battle.

Three - attack your giant. Goliath had come into the actual territory of the Israelites. He had crossed their line. He was taunting them. And if you tolerate a Goliath, he will take over your territory. He will come right up on your doorstep.

That is why you don't run from giants. You don't negotiate with them. You attack them. The Bible tells us, "As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him" (1 Samuel 17:48). As the enemy drew closer, David ran right at him.

Whatever your giant may be, force it into the light of day. Stop rationalizing it. Stop excusing it. Realize you can't defeat it in your own strength.

Call on God and pray for His power, and then attack it. Draw lines and be accountable to others. Stay away from people or situations where you would be easily tempted. And don't let that giant back into your life again.

BUILD YOUR STONE WALL, DIG IN, HOLD YOUR GROUND and DO NOT LET THAT GIANT CROSS YOUR GOAL LINE.  Stay in prayer, read God's word, learn Gods word, follow Gods Word, and Share God's word with others.

Finally, trust in the Lord. Don't look at God in the light of your giant. Instead, look at your giant in the light of God.

Close:  PSALM 18:2

"The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.  He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.

Adoption Ministry
For over twenty-five years New Beginnings Home has been available to help young mothers who have chosen life for their babies.  New Beginnings is a safe haven where unconditional love and friendship are the norm and women can plan what is best for themselves and their babies while having their physical and emotional needs cared for.  A women finding herself pregnant without a strong support base can be frightened, not knowing where to turn.  There are unique challenges to be addressed and there are no easy answers.  Single parenting, adoption, marriage- what is best?  Yet when these options are considered and walked through in a loving Christian environment, each carries a hope and a future for both mom and child.
They are committed to:
* Being founded upon biblical principles.
* Connecting infants and needy children with families in a fair and equitable manner through adoption.
* Educating families to adopt children from other countries and/or children of color or children with physical or emotional needs.
* Serving as advocates to schools, churches, communities, and government.
* Providing support for the adoptive family and birth family through any challenges they may face.

Tacoma Rescue Mission

The Mission was founded in 1912 by the world-renowned evangelist Gipsy Smith.  While his stay in Tacoma was short, he inspired key individuals to carry out this important work in the name of Christ.  The Tacoma Rescue Mission helps all people; including clients, volunteers, donors and staff, to become their best.  They provide emergency services such as shelter and food to the homeless or hurting; offer self-sufficiency programs to help lift a person from poverty and break the chains of addiction; support prevention programs and share their Christian faith.

The Philippines

For the second year in a row, Abundant Life Fellowship sent a team on a short term missions trip to the Philippines.  During these three-weeks, our team members ministered through teaching, preaching and worship at numerous churches and a variety of other venues throughout the regions of Luzon and Samar.  God has opened a great door for the Gospel here.  Pray that God will continue to use Abundant Life Fellowship in this outreach, and that He will pour out the finances needed to make future trips fruitful.

 Africa: David and Nadia Johansen

David and Nadia Johansen have invested many years serving the people of North Africa and the Middle East, acting as lights in great spiritual darkness.  The Johansen's work with the Muslim people in these areas, sharing the love of Christ and helping to pioneer churches, with a special emphasis on touching and healing abused women through their "House of Tenderness".  Continue to pray for this work that God will keep them safe in a very tumultuous region, and give them a great harvest for the Kingdom.

 Orphanage- Latvia: Inga Karnishauska

The Gardene, Latvian orphanage is one of over 300 such facilities in Latvia.  It's located 150 miles Northeast of Riga.  Inga Karnishauska is our liaison for the Gardene Orphanage, where hundreds of children are being given an opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ, and receive Him as Savior.  With the financial support from Abundant Life Fellowship, over 40 children received eye surgery, 16 computers were purchased to teach the children to type and 5 sewing machines were acquired to help them get jobs when they come of age.  Abundant Life Fellowship has also provided a variety of clothing donations; which the Latvian children have desperately needed.  Along with serving as liaison for the orphanage, Inga preaches in many Latvian churches and translates sermons from Pastors Rick and Dester for distribution to over 30 pastors monthly.

Russia / Latvia: Terrence and Jill Hall  (Assemblies of God Foreign Missions)

Since 1993 the Hall's have served on the mission field, primarily in the former Soviet Union, but recently, they have expanded their teaching ministry to such places as Guyana and the Caribbean.  They founded the Latvian Bible College Ministry Center and participated in the planting of many churches throughout this country.  Their first years as missionaries were valuable in language acquisition, cultural understanding, powerful preaching, biblical teaching, and relationship building amongst the Russian church.  Now, the Hall's are once again turning to Latvia, where they have committed to establishing four new churches a year over the next four years.  The heart of their ministry is to serve in the hard-to-reach places where many don't want to go, but where the light of Christ is needed nonetheless.
