Don’t Get Caught in Distractions

Men of Vision

1 August 2015

 Opening Prayer

Introduction:  You know Pastor has been preaching about WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?  He has talked about MIND MONSTERS.  So bottom line everything that he has been preaching in my opinion is distraction to take you away from God’s Word.  I have been dealing with some family and work problems, which have put my stress factor in over drive.  I have not been into the WORD as much as I need to be to have HIM resolve my problems.  WHY? Because, I have been distracted with other things and Satan is trying to get into my head and heart.   Have you or are you being distracted from learning or getting closer to our Lord or getting into His Word?

Introduction to Lesson:
The story was all over the news: A businessman, after withdrawing $100,000 at the bank, stopped at a store and placed his briefcase full of money beside him on the checkout counter. A man standing next to him engaged him for a few seconds in a conversation while another man walked up, grabbed the briefcase and disappeared. When the businessman turned around, his money was gone. He panicked. The crime was caught on the store’s surveillance camera and serves as a warning that a few seconds of distraction is enough for you to lose your most valuable possessions.

One of our enemy’s tactics is distractions.

He tries to attract and divert our attention, confuse our mind, sidetrack our steps and draw us away from our God-given focus. So often we don’t recognize what’s happening until much later when we find ourselves way off course.

Recognizing distractions is vital in serving God and fulfilling our calling as His witnesses.

Nehemiah had left his prestigious job as the king’s cupbearer, along with the comfort and luxury of life in the palace, to travel to Jerusalem to rebuild its destroyed walls. He rallied and inspired the returned exiles for the task, but soon he ran into opposition from the enemies of the Jews and their undercover collaborators. They requested an urgent meeting with him. They spread lies about his faithfulness to the king. They circulated rumors of threats on his life, and they even hired a prophet to deliver a false message to get him to stop the work and go into hiding.

Thankfully, Nehemiah recognized what all these things really were: distractions from completing the work God had asked him to do. He responded: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you? … Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!” (Nehemiah 6:3, 11)

Jesus, too, immediately recognized that the enemy was trying to use his loving disciple to try to sidetrack Him from going to Jerusalem so He may die at the cross for our sins. Peter had said to Him, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” (Matthew 16:22)

Jesus replied, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men” (Matthew 16:23).

What about us? Do we recognize distractions as being distractions,

especially when they are very good things? For example, once a man wanted to look up an event from early Christianity, so a son brought his dad an 800-page Church history book from the library. The man could have gone to the index and straight to the page that answered my question, but he didn’t. The book and the pictures were too intriguing to put down, and instead of spending 10 minutes, the man found himself spending all afternoon reading about interesting things that had nothing to do with what he needed to know.

We are surrounded by hundreds of good causes, wholesome activities, wonderful opportunities, as well as a host of electronics and the world of internet, which all compete for our attention and the precious time we have to reach this world for Christ. If we don’t recognize distractions, we become victims of good things.

Yes, as human beings we need times of rest, to unwind from our stressful work and have special family times and activities. However, we must be careful that the good things don’t take over our focus and the time we once used to spend in prayer and in God’s Word.

Life moves very fast. We have only a short time before it’s over. Let us not get caught in the web of seeking the things on earth.

What then must we do to keep our focus?

We must be aware that distractions, especially the ones that make us happy, entertain us and fill our days with excitement, are easy for us to accept, but saying no to temptations and yes to inconveniences and to the way of the cross is what we have to deliberately choose.

Therefore, we need to be alert and discerning and honestly judge our hearts to see where we are with our focus regarding the purpose of God for our life here on earth.

We also need to realize that we are not strong enough to finish this race on our own. We daily need to ask God for wisdom, discernment and grace to stay on course. Then at the end of our life, we will be able to say, along with the apostle Paul, “But none of these things move me,” (Acts 20:24) and “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

Adoption Ministry
For over twenty-five years New Beginnings Home has been available to help young mothers who have chosen life for their babies.  New Beginnings is a safe haven where unconditional love and friendship are the norm and women can plan what is best for themselves and their babies while having their physical and emotional needs cared for.  A women finding herself pregnant without a strong support base can be frightened, not knowing where to turn.  There are unique challenges to be addressed and there are no easy answers.  Single parenting, adoption, marriage- what is best?  Yet when these options are considered and walked through in a loving Christian environment, each carries a hope and a future for both mom and child.
They are committed to:
* Being founded upon biblical principles.
* Connecting infants and needy children with families in a fair and equitable manner through adoption.
* Educating families to adopt children from other countries and/or children of color or children with physical or emotional needs.
* Serving as advocates to schools, churches, communities, and government.
* Providing support for the adoptive family and birth family through any challenges they may face.

Tacoma Rescue Mission

The Mission was founded in 1912 by the world-renowned evangelist Gipsy Smith.  While his stay in Tacoma was short, he inspired key individuals to carry out this important work in the name of Christ.  The Tacoma Rescue Mission helps all people; including clients, volunteers, donors and staff, to become their best.  They provide emergency services such as shelter and food to the homeless or hurting; offer self-sufficiency programs to help lift a person from poverty and break the chains of addiction; support prevention programs and share their Christian faith.

The Philippines

For the second year in a row, Abundant Life Fellowship sent a team on a short term missions trip to the Philippines.  During these three-weeks, our team members ministered through teaching, preaching and worship at numerous churches and a variety of other venues throughout the regions of Luzon and Samar.  God has opened a great door for the Gospel here.  Pray that God will continue to use Abundant Life Fellowship in this outreach, and that He will pour out the finances needed to make future trips fruitful.

Philippines: Steve McKinney

Pastor Steve McKinney is the son of veteran Asia Pacific A/G Missionaries Everett and Evelyn  McKinney, and has been an evangelist since 1997.  He serves as the Resident Pastor of a new branch of a multi-site Church within the Tabernacle of Faith International organization in Manila.  Pastor Steve has been involved with a ministry team which offers counseling to Call Center workers, and through this approach, is able to lead these overwhelmed young people to Christ.  he previously held credentials with Harvest Christian Center in Chicago and by the Assemblies of God of Indonesia.  he is currently ordained by Tabernacle of Faith International in the Philippines.

Singapore: Everett and Evelyn McKinney  (Assemblies of God Foreign Missions)

Veteran missionaries with the Assemblies of God for nearly 45 years, Everett and Evelyn have taught in Bible Colleges around the world, most recently in India, Singapore, Burma and Samoa, encouraging local pastors as they share the Gospel.  Their multifaceted and exceptionally versatile ministry has enabled them to enter numerous countries and equip spiritual leaders worldwide.

 Africa: David and Nadia Johansen

David and Nadia Johansen have invested many years serving the people of North Africa and the Middle East, acting as lights in great spiritual darkness.  The Johansen's work with the Muslim people in these areas, sharing the love of Christ and helping to pioneer churches, with a special emphasis on touching and healing abused women through their "House of Tenderness".  Continue to pray for this work that God will keep them safe in a very tumultuous region, and give them a great harvest for the Kingdom.

 Orphanage- Latvia: Inga Karnishauska

The Gardene, Latvian orphanage is one of over 300 such facilities in Latvia.  It's located 150 miles Northeast of Riga.  Inga Karnishauska is our liaison for the Gardene Orphanage, where hundreds of children are being given an opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ, and receive Him as Savior.  With the financial support from Abundant Life Fellowship, over 40 children received eye surgery, 16 computers were purchased to teach the children to type and 5 sewing machines were acquired to help them get jobs when they come of age.  Abundant Life Fellowship has also provided a variety of clothing donations; which the Latvian children have desperately needed.  Along with serving as liaison for the orphanage, Inga preaches in many Latvian churches and translates sermons from Pastors Rick and Dester for distribution to over 30 pastors monthly.

Russia / Latvia: Terrence and Jill Hall  (Assemblies of God Foreign Missions)

Since 1993 the Hall's have served on the mission field, primarily in the former Soviet Union, but recently, they have expanded their teaching ministry to such places as Guyana and the Caribbean.  They founded the Latvian Bible College Ministry Center and participated in the planting of many churches throughout this country.  Their first years as missionaries were valuable in language acquisition, cultural understanding, powerful preaching, biblical teaching, and relationship building amongst the Russian church.  Now, the Hall's are once again turning to Latvia, where they have committed to establishing four new churches a year over the next four years.  The heart of their ministry is to serve in the hard-to-reach places where many don't want to go, but where the light of Christ is needed nonetheless.
